Three ammo box speakers

FAQ

What sort of speakers and amplifier do you use?

Our ammo box speaker use a powerful 2 x 50 watt bluetooth receiver and amplifier paired with superior quality Kicker CSC4 50 watt speakers. This combination of speaker and amplifier is well suited to all forms and music and works well with tracks that have more bass that needs to be played loud! Note that the amplifier in these speakers also includes a configurable "gain" (loudness" setting. By default we set this to a medium setting but can be increased or reduced according to your needs. See our Blog for more details on how to do this.

What kind of battery is in the speaker?

All our speakers use a Lucas 5Ah 12 volt battery. This battery will easily last all day and will recharge quickly.

The battery is a sealed unit and can be used at any angle. If well looked after the battery should give many years of good service.

What is the bluetooth range of the speaker?

As the bluetooth antenna is enclosed in a metal box the range may not be as far as a traditional plastic speaker or a device with an external antenna. The range is probably about 5-10 metres and may be extended if you open the lid of the speaker. Generally speaking it's best to keep the phone fairly close to the speaker for the best results - plus you can charge your phone from the USB socket at the same time!

What size are the ammo boxes and what do they look like?

The boxes are 30 cm long, 15cm deep and 18cm high. They are made of steel and have a strong lid with a handle which snaps firmly shut. They typically have stencil writing and some warning stickers on them from their time in the army (unless you have chosen to have yours painted a custom colour of course).

Rustic patina ammo boxes before conversion

As they have often had a hard life and are not particularly looked after there will often be small scratches, dents or other imperfections, however in our opinion this gives them a more authentic look and certainly adds to the character! We hand select each box and try to get ones that aren't too damaged and have a nice shape with minimal rust or other damage. The "patina" boxes are often much rustier and have much more worn-out look about them but are structurally sound and no less robust than the normal ex-army look.

How heavy is the ammo box speaker?

The ammo box speaker weighs about five and a half kilograms, or about twelve pounds. It's a good weight so you may not want to carry it all day but it's sturdy and not likely to fall over or get easily damaged.
